OMEGA Speedmaster pre-Professional 105.003

Bedat & Co. has an interesting history for not being such an old brand. Life, lost, and then reborn, the brand today is now trying to attack Cartier's market share for women's pieces. During the brand's former life (and potentially again in its future) it had a few men's models as well. One of my favorite of them (and one of the only ones) was the Bedat & Co. Number (No.) 8.

This is actually one of these pieces announced as limited editions for the NYC boutique in 2011. Perhaps more will come in the future. I like the Overseas model because it is a sport watch. Not like an actual sport watch, but more like a guy wearing a monocle in a safari outfit sitting for afternoon tea. It suggests you do more than just wear three-piece suits. I do however anticipate that VC will be updating its Overseas watch in the near future. Just a guess....

The watch itself is placed in an 18k pink gold case that is matched to a black alligator strap. Not sure about the case width or thickness though - but this isn't going to be a small timepiece. It really is an incredible machine and I can't wait to get some hands-on time with one.

Hublot US Liberty Bang Limited Edition Watch Watch Releases

Starting in the spring, participating brands will slowly start to announce the special watches they are offering to the auction. These are often really exciting to see. The Only Watch rules dictate that all watches donated for auction must be unique. This either means the first piece in a limited edition, or a totally unique watch made specially for the event by a brand. None of the watches have been officially debuted yet, but I do have a list of the participating brands. Only Watch 2011 will be held September 22 2011 at 6pm or 4pm GMT time (actual starting time isn't clear yet) in Monaco. Before that the pieces available for auction will be on tour around the world. The Best Men’s Watch award went to the Hermès Arceau Le Temps Suspendu. I really didn't expect this; most of us don't think of Hermès when we think of fine Swiss/French watchmaking. Do read Ariel's review of this watch from earlier in the year.

Other than the bezel and minor dial changes the EasyDiver Black Swan is the same watch as the 2010 new model as far as I can tell. Inside the watch is a Roger Dubuis in-house made caliber RD821 automatic movement. The watches are water resistant to 300 meters and come on nice rubber straps. Unfortunately the price is pretty high, even though there will only be 88 Black Swan watches made. Up from about ,000 for the 2010 Roger Dubuis EasyDiver models, the Black Swan will retail for around ,000  (13,900 Euros).

They say that eyes are a window to one's soul. That may be true, but so are your hands. You may not have noticed it, but hands are extremely communicative when people talk. Either hands are part of elaborate Italian-style gesticulation, or they offer more subtle signs as to how someone is feeling. When communicating with others we almost always notice their hands. Think about it the next few times you are talking to someone. Close to the hands are the wrists, and one one of those wrists could be a watch.

Darkness viewing should be rather good. With hour markers and hands that size, being covered in SuperLumiNova should be impressive. I really do love a well lumed dial. Inside the watch is a Swiss automatic movement that Graham calls their Calibre G1734. Probably a base ETA. Prices are between 9,300 - 10,500 Swiss Francs. My favorite part of the press release on the watch is the following statement: "By the way, if you are not a professional diver and you use your watch in water no deeper than your bath tub, that’s also fine."

In-house movements are a tricky thing when it comes to answering “why?” Why make your own movement when a solid ETA does the job really well? To be honest, a lot of the time the only reason is the perception of value. For my money, I’d rather buy an ETA much of the time. ETA and Omega are linked, of course, as both are under the Swatch Group.

After briefly experimenting with Liquidmetal Omega decided to license the exclusive right to use the material. I don’t know details of the agreement, but don’t expect to see Liquidmetal in watches outside Omega — or the Swatch Group. What Liquidmetal didn’t come with was the ability to industrialize the process of using it. Omega buys the alloy in rods from the US and then must do all the work themselves. The reason Liquidmetal is in so few Omega watches at this time simply comes from the fact that Omega is still working out how to manufacture components with Liquidmetal in mass quantities — again, to industrialize the process.

While the subdial arrangement on the face looks small, the dial is really easy to read with a style that seems to mix Star Trek and 1945 sport chronograph. Not sure about pricing, but I have a feeling it will be a bit more than I would guess. Oh, and there is also a woman's model of this watch. Not sure the name. It has the same style dial, but with no chronograph in about a 33mm wide steel case with an ETA 2824-2 automatic movement in it.

The Seacraft GMT contains a pretty unique movement that is new this year from Soprod. As Perrelet is in the same group as Soprod, all are Soprod movements specially decorated for Perrelet. The three-hand automatic has a P-261 movement, the GMT has a P-281 movement, and the Chronograph has a P-271 movement (all of automatic, of course). The GMT movement has a date wheel and a small GMT hand that is centrally mounted. The pushers on the side of the case are for advancing the GMT hand back and forth. It is possible that one of the pushers is actually to adjust the date - I don't recall 100%, but you get the idea. There is also a little porthole near 9 o'clock that is a day/night indicator.

The watches themselves are interesting and beautiful, but not necessarily what I expect when I think of "Jules Verne." Many people consider Verne to be the father of modern science fiction. For me, he is much more about that, versus just exploration. The watches seem to focus more on the places he describes in a decorative manner, rather than the subject matter of what he was talking about. These are very "un sci-fi" watches. They are however very pretty timepieces that happen to have a rocket ship or balloon on them. These could just as easily have nothing to do with Jules Verne and still be presented the same way.

Dufour brings an arsenal of experience to the table, having studied Economics at university followed by the gamut of positions at several watch brands: marketing at the Swatch Group, product development for Chopard, and sales with Ulysse Nardin. He refers to himself as a conductor in the orchestra of the Zenith watch company.

I would really like to know more about what Yvan Arpa did with Gene Simmons for a week. I tried to ask him but didn't get much information. Apparently they liked the result. Right now there are three watches. Each are in 47mm wide Artya "deconstructed" cases. The first one features Gene Simmons, then another with Paul Stanley, and the last one has a KISS guitar pick and guitar string in the dial - that were actually used by Paul Stanley. Interesting use of a guitar pick in a watch I must say. These look a bit spooky and surreal... which is probably exactly what the KISS folk wanted.
